'65 Pro Mod GTO
We have been dedicated to racing traditional Pontiacs for many years and it has been, and continues to be, a challenge which we enjoy. In an effort to make our past and present race cars more competitive, we have devoted extensive time to research and development to advance our performance. The GTO is the product of many years of work and we could not be more pleased with our results.
We Look Back on 2014
The Mellott Racing Team was able to participate in the 2014 Pontiac Tri Power Nationals held the first weekend of August in Norwalk, Ohio. The Friday racing was good, and we were the number one qualifier at the end of the first day of qualifying even though we rolled through the lights and started the timer long before we left the line. We ran a 7.07 ET at 211 mph and the car was running strong.
The weather changed over night, and we woke up to thunder on Saturday morning. Just about the time racing was to begin, the rain set in -- and stayed with us all day. Late in the afternoon the sky cleared and the track crew went to work drying up the water. The Norwalk Team did their usual good job of track prep, and the racing commenced. We'd like to thank them for a great weekend.
We hit the starting line all tuned up and ready to run. When we left the line we blew the tires off and went into severe tire shake. There was no driving through it even though we tried. Back in the pits we reviewed the computer data, it told us we were on the throttle for about 2 seconds, and in that time we broke plenty of stuff. We took the teeth off of the ring and pinion, cracked the third member, broke the Lenco, shook the headers loose and broke the parachute mount off the car.
The good news is new parts are on the way to get us put back together -- and there have been several passes on the new valve train with no issues. We are anxious for repairs to be completed and get back out on the track.
We would like to thank Hammer Time Racing for allowing us to pit with them under the tent. It was a life saver when it rained. Also thanks to Jeff F, who is doing a great job tuning, as well as Tony H, JT H, Jay S, John G and Kevin S, who all made the trip to help crew the car. It is no small job to get this car ready and to service it between rounds.
Thanks also to our fans and friends who stopped by to chat with us over the three days we were there. Also, to my wife Barb for the video, and my sister Helen for flying in from Florida to support the team and offer our Tee shirts to the race fans.
As our last race for the season, the team went to the Shakedown at Summit Motorsports Park . We were in the middle of our first day of testing and something let loose in the motor. We have it out of the car and to the engine shop for repairs. We will be ready to go for the 2015 season.
We would like to thank our sponsors for their support. Take a look at the sponsor page for a recap of who it is that helps us with the funding of our Pro Mod. If you have the opportunity to patronize them please do so – they are great companies and good people that have superior service and products.
We also appreciate the support of our fans. It is always great to talk to everyone at the track. We look forward to seeing you in 2014 at the track. If you see us set up in the pits stop by and say hello – we love to talk drag racing.
